Can a 2 year old Eclectus parrot be trained to talk?
Hi,
We just got two Eclectus parrots that we were told were about 2 to 3 years old. They say “Hello!” but that’s about it. Is it possible to teach them to learn new words? I read somewhere that if they didn’t learn to talk alot by 6 months, then they wouldn’t be able to.
We have been trying to get them to say new words, like bye bye, food, pretty bird, etc, but haven’t had any luck and we just don’t know if we are wasting our time.
Thanks!
I don’t know where you read that, but I don’t think that’s true. I’ve been around a lot of Eclectus, as a hand-feeder, vet tech and as a friend of a breeder of several Eclectus, and on the whole, I’ve known them to be pretty good talkers.
Perhaps what you were reading was saying that you might not have a good talker if they’re not talking by that age, but again, I’d have to mostly disagree. Lots of parrots don’t come into their own before the age of three of four, and end up good talkers. And, since most parrot species are more alike than they are different, I’d tend to think that true of Eclectus as well.
I don’t know how you got these two, but sometimes parrots don’t talk because of their situation. They may be unhappy in a household, or they could even be a little sick. Since they are new to you, it’s always best to bring them into your avian vet for a health check. Many stores and breeders will tell you that parrots don’t need to see the vet, because it’s a big selling point; however, parrots are just like any other living creature, whether it be human, dog, cat, etc., and we all need to go to the doctor.
The best way, I find to teach your parrot to talk is to just talk to it. Parrots love interaction, even the ones that don’t like to be handled. I have one rescue who is so nasty, I have to take here out of her cage with a perch; however, she’s a great talker, and loves talking with me.
Of course, there are parrots who don’t talk. Each bird is an individual, and some just don’t have the desire to talk. I have a grey who rarely talks, and has a very small vocabulary, but that’s fine. He’s got a great personality, and I love him dearly.
Good luck with the new Eclectus!
