Why is there a bird digging a hole in my backyard with another standing watch?

i looked outside and there was a big fat bird standing there and dirt flying from the ground, i looked closer and it pocked its head out! I’m pretty sure that they are pigeons… are they like building a nest or something?
i dont want to go outside and look cuz i dont want to scare them away
they just switched spots too

Some species lay their eggs in the ground, they will be very protective of their nest after the eggs have been layed, and will attack you if you go near their nest. It may be best to shoo them away now.
