What are the symptoms of old age in Amazon Parrots?
Do their personalities/habits/level of activity change at all?
What specific changes do they exhibit?
My adopted Orange Winged amazon’s previous owner told me that she was 5 over the phone. But when I arrived at her house and my mother asked, she said 4. She has been passed around to three different owners, so 5/4 seems an awfully short time for so much to happen. Aslo, she is very inactive. She is completely healthy, eats like a pig, occasionally chews on things and preens a whole lot, but I never catch her romping around or attacking her toys like other amazons and birds I’ve seen do. Might this be a symptom of old age?
While I agree that it an awfully short time for your friend to be passed around, it is a possibility. Some people go out and buy a bird, then they find out how much work it actually is, and that they’ver gotten themself into more that they bargained for, so they pass the bird to somebody else.
She is probably inactive to her moving around so much, and she will start acting like a “normal Amazon” in a few days. If she doesn’t, then take her in to a Certified Avian Vet for a wellness check…she may have a case of worms (which is very common for Amazons), and that will take away a birds energy. This is easily treated with medication in the water for about 10 days.
If it is an older bird (which Amazons can live to be more than 60 years old), its plumage would be dull and light in color. Of course, they would not be as active as a younger bird, but they would still play.
