I started this painting of the John F Trumbull House (Stonington CT) in 1991. It was finished in 2006 with the addition of a night sky and seagulls.
The essence of the picture lies in the balance of two geometries: the solid architecture of the house and the dynamic of gulls in flight.
There is a surreal, dreamlike quality to the picture that remains mysterious even to me. I knew I needed a sleeping house with a lighted cupola and silent gliding birds. I needed it to fit together with watchlike precision.
Some dreams are like that. Their meaning remains just beyond the dreamer's grasp.
