Memorial

Larger View

'Memorial' features a piece of wreckage that washed ashore on Block Island. It's about the size of a small car and appears to be from a fishing trawler.

I loved its powerful presence, its rich coppery rust, and the fluid tangle of its nets. It seemed like more than just a piece of wreckage.

Did the trawler itself survive? I don't know. But as I painted it, I thought of it as a memorial to the rugged souls who work the seas, and lose their lives to it.
