Choosing the right bird as a pet

Are you considering adopting a pet parrot? How do you know what is right for you? Before you buy or adopt, you need to do your research and understand which feathered friend is right for you. Consider their lifespans, for instance, some birds can live up to one hundred years. Are you prepared to make a commitment to an animal that may outlive you? Understand the dietary requirements for the bird you are interested in, because some of them have very particular diets that can get rather pricey over time. Other things to consider before you adopt a parrot follow.

Noise

Before you buy a parrot, find out what type of vocalizing the type of parrot you are interested in makes. Some have very melodic and pleasant vocalizations but, others border on the obnoxious, with their screeching and squawking. You need to get all of the facts before you take the plunge as a bird owner and, especially, a parrot owner. What are you willing to deal with in terms of noise around your home?

Cleanliness

Before you invest in a parrot, consider how clean you like to keep your home. Birds are messy and, the bigger they are, the more mess you will experience. Birds are messy eaters. They spit their seeds on the wall and on the floor. If you keep the cage too close to the wall, you will find the wall stained by the constant pelting of seeds. The key here is to find a place where whatever your bird sends flying out of his or her cage is able to be swept up or vacuumed quickly. You may find yourself doing this a couple times a day.

Time

As with any pet, if you don’t have time to invest in your bird, you shouldn’t adopt a parrot. Birds must be handled daily and worked with in order to tame them. They require time to integrate into your lifestyle. You have to be able to spend at minimum of a couple hours each day, handling and working with your parrot to train it and socialize it. If you don’t have this kind of time, then don’t invest in a bird as a pet.

Food

You have to pay close attention to your bird’s diet. Parrots require fresh fruits and vegetables daily in addition to their standard seed. You also need to monitor what the bird has eaten and remove the leftovers to keep the cage clean and your bird healthy. Think about the texture and flavors you provide to your bird. Your bird should have a variety of textures and flavors daily to stimulate its psyche, making it a more adaptable member of the family.

Beak

Bird’s beaks are like our fingernails, they constantly are growing and need to be trimmed and maintained. Your parrot’s beak will need to be exercised and cared for in order for your bird to stay healthy. Always make sure you supervise your bird when he or she is outside of his or her cage. Parrots have been known to destroy carpets, furniture and valuable items around the home. Parrots need to exercise their jaws and they will chew.

So, it you are considering adding a feathered friend to your family, investigate birds before you adopt a parrot. Make sure you do your research and know what you are getting yourself into before you adopt a pet.
